đŻ Metrics that matter for incident reporting: What to measure
Not all numbers are created equalâespecially when it comes to measuring the impact of your speak-up tools.
In 2025, HR and compliance leaders are leaning hard into data-backed decisions. Whether you're assessing the willingness of your employees to surface issues or tracking how effectively your team responds to misconduct reports, these are a few of the KPIs youâll want on your radar:
- Time to close â How long does it take to resolve a case from first report to final action? Faster isn't always better, but consistency and transparency matter. You can find this metric in your Talk to Spot report data exportâalong with the date and time of your first action on new reportsâso you can track case responsiveness.
- Reporting rate per 100 employees â Is your team empowered to speak up if something goes wrong? A sudden drop could signal fear or distrust; consistently low reporting may indicate that you need to (re)communicate your tools and policies more effectively. (See Case Management > Communication Resources in your Talk to Spot admin dashboard for aids.)
- Anonymous vs. named reports â While anonymous reporting is an important option to build trust, a high percentage of anonymous submissions might indicate concerns about retaliation. How to remedy this? Investigate the anonymous reports you receive without pressuring people to reveal their identity (Talk to Spot has tools for this); weâve found this can lead to willingness to come forward directly.
Why these metrics? They reveal important trends within your organization. High reporting rates suggest psychological safety. Long resolution times could hint at inefficient processes or lack of urgency in dealing with employee issues. A lack of anonymous options might be limiting disclosure, while an increasing proportion of named reports may indicate increasing trust in your teamâs process for dealing with incoming issues.

đ Are we too obsessed with engagement surveys?
Who hasnât taken a company survey and wondered if anyone was actually going to read it? (Or secretly picked the safest answers becauseâŠwell, trust issues.) Engagement surveys have become the go-to for gaining insights, but are we using them correctly? Or too much?
As Maria Amato of Korn Ferry puts it, âEmployee surveys are great. They are just over-relied on.â And sheâs not alone in that thinking. While surveys can be helpful for understanding some aspects of workplace culture, theyâre not magic.
The problem? Theyâre often used to answer every single question HR teams have, from predicting turnover to gauging reactions to new software rollouts. But they wonât give you the full picture, and it turns out a lot of employees donât really trust them. Only 32% of US workers surveyed by Visier said they believe engagement surveys reflect reality.
The takeaway? Keep the surveys, but donât stop there. Pair them with real, actionable data, such as retention stats and promotion rates, to actually get a feel for whatâs going on in your workplace. And tie them to your speak-up tool so employees have the option to surface issues in a more detailed way. Because no one wants their thoughtful feedback to disappear into the HR void.
